Two damaged children Teddy Brex, whom no-one loved, and so found it easier to relate to objects or things which never let him down; and Francine Hill, who was discovered sitting by the body of her mother, her skirt red with blood. She couldn't tell the police or her father anything to help track down the killer.... Children grow up in different ways. Teddy became a handsome young man, Francine was beautiful - a sight for sore eyes. But it was death that brought them together.

Terrific read! I enjoyed every word of this novel. I thought this novel would be a police procedural, but it was a psychological drama. I initially liked Julia, Francine's stepmother, but ended up despising her. I had sympathy for Francine, and ended up liking her. I'm interested in knowing how she grows into adulthood; hopefully, this happens in "Shatter Point". Lastly, there was no point in which I had any empathy for Teddy. I found him to be a despicable freak of nature. He was rotten to the core, not to mention a sociopath of the highest degree. He was given his just reward handed down by a just God. Ruth Rendall wrote a marvelous story, in which the most minute details were penned, in order to give the reader a vivid image of the characters. I felt as if the three main characters were standing beside me, and were real people. Ms. Rendall has a great talent for using language to its best advantage, in a colorful manner. I highly recommend this novel to those readers who enjoy psychological drama with dark and gritty protagonists.
I purchased a used hardback of "A Sight for Sore Eyes" from an Amazon vendor which, by the way, was in excellent condition.

A Sight for Sore Eyes (Audible Audio Edition) Ruth Rendell David Threlfall Audible Studios Books Reviews

I hope Ruth Rendell did not write about the people she knew because if so all she knows are wierdos. This is a typical Rendell with totally amoral people interacting in such a way that they get what they deserve (mostly) without the intervention of legal authority. Her style is crisp and sophisticated and her insight into various neurotic or psychotic personalities is remarkably believable. A treat to read, but if I lived in England I would avoid her neighborhood.
This is one of those novels you have to stick with. The author uses the first part of the novel to develop various characters, moving from one character to another as the novel progresses. You know that they will come together at some point, so read on.

There is a woman who is a former band groupie, now in a marriage with an older man, who keeps looking for what would commonly be called "young hunks." She may invent reasons to call a plumber, glazier, landscaper, etc. She has mixed success, and choosing men at random can have consequences.

There is a brilliant young man, attracted to beauty, who grew up in a dysfunctional family, and who developed in strange directions that left him with strange ideas. He does not relate well to people until he sees a particular woman across the room, but he has odd ideas about a relationship.

Then there is the young woman, traumatized as a child by the murder of her mother, and now overly protected by an obsessive step-mother. She would like to move on and lead a more normal life like her friends from school. She looks for someone to rescue her from her present situation, but knights in shining armor are not always what they seem to be.

All of this comes together in unexpected ways for everyone concerned. It is a psychological drama. People are not always what they seem on the surface, and you need to be careful about whom you become involved with.

Readers are acvised to read this novel BEFORE reading the more recent novel "The Vault" The Vault An Inspector Wexford Novel which is a sequel that picks up the story many years later.
Ruth Rendell has the uncanny ability to lay bare the souls and psyches of her characters and at the same time scaring you, the reader to death. It's the ordinariness of the players on her stage with their ordinary emotions suddenly gone awry, the insidious little personality quirks that slowly mold a person's character, that are the hallmark of Rendell's superb writing. "Sight for sore Eyes" is not a whodunit because you know who dun it. The suspense, however is excruciating as you wait for the players on Rendell's stage to get their comeuppance.

Rendell explains what "sight for sore eyes" means, although it is an old expression. "It meant that looking at beauty took away pain and hurt and made you feel better". A beautiful person, a beautiful painting, even a beautiful house. Beauty of various types as seen by the characters and drive the plot. Rendell has the perfect knack of creating characters that are totally believable and she gets inside their heads with an expertise far greater than Freud's.

When you put down a book such as "Sight for Sore Eyes" her characters stay with you. The four protagonists in "Sight" are unforgettable, weirdly eerie, weirdly human. They are human in a way that reminds you unpleasantly of yourself. There's Teddy, a skilled woodworking craftsman who finds much ugliness in the world. There's Francine, a beautiful young girl who had seen her mother's murder and is struggling to find jerself. There's Harriet, a middle-aged nymphomaniac who hires a series of attractive young repairmen to gratify her sexual appetites. And there's Julia, Francine's stepmother, who manipulates the girl, trying to orchestrate everything Francine does, trying to envelope her in a stultifying over- coddled cocoon.

Throughout the novel runs a black thread, a beautiful diamond engagement ring. Everything that goes around comes around as you will see and the ring almost takes on a life of its own.

"Sight for sore eyes" won the Mystery Writers of America's Grand Master Award. The novel is marvelous. Even her descriptions such as the Virginia Creeper with its million leaves seeming to almost cover up the nakedness of its house, the shimmering green leaves almost threatening and the brilliant reds and yellows in the fall form a sort of shroud. The sheer quality of this novel which is superior in every respect is rare and uniquely the work of genius. Don't miss it!
