Part One of the Cabaret Trilogy. The saga begins as World War II is nearing its end. The Walk-On Cabaret is a captivating story about a young Jewish-German chemist, Michael Rouget, forced to work for the German government during WWII. The story starts with Michael's superior meeting with the German government about a special top-secret project Michael is working on which is critical to Germany's success. As the story unfolds, Michael finds that his invention is not only critical to Germany, but sought after by the Allies, and could have a devastating effect on post-war economy. As Michael deals with his emotions, and reacts to situations thrust upon him, he develops unusual bonds and friendships that extend beyond country, religion or political affiliations. And yet, like all others during WWII, Michael's moral values and opinions are tested as he becomes an actor with no lines, just reacting without planning or thought.
While this novel is set in Germany during WWII, the reaction and responses by Michael, his friends and his acquaintances, is a timeless statement about human nature.
The Walk-On Cabaret is a wonderful, warm and insightful book; and I'm anxiously awaiting the next book from this author.
Well written accurate historical data fascinating read
A little slow at the start. But hard to put down, once you get rolling. I liked the character development. I definitely recommend it.
The Walk-On Cabaret is a fascinating depiction of the waning days of the second World War. I found the description of the characters' emotions and motivations spell-binding. The novel made me feel as if I was in the midst of the action. I am looking forward to reading Andrea Sneed's sequel "The China Carbaret."
In reading Mr. Sneed's book, I was taken with the continous action of each of the four intertwined plots connected to the main theme of the book which involves a mad dash to escape with an unusual formula invented during WW11. Well written for a first time author. I see Mr. Sneed doing good things in the future.
