From the winner of the James D. Phelan Literary Award, comes FRENCH TOASTED, an amusing romp through the lives of four twenty-somethings in Paris. Meet Fern Dodelbach. Well-meaning, hapless, and often off-base, Fern would do anything for her friends even if it means looking like a fool, a not uncommon experience in her life.
In French Toasted, when her wild-child, movie-star cousin Celia arrives in Paris unannounced, it’s all Fern and her friends can do to keep their cool. Which they don’t. Over-the-top antics ensue, including an over-frisky dog incident and an audition for the part of Queen of the Zombies. When the smoke clears, and the clothing tatters fall where they may, will Fern still be standing tall and proud? Or will The Curse of Celia reduce her to a shambles?

I like to have some meaning with my laughs, and French Toasted gave me just that. The main character Fern gets herself in and out of some hilarious faux pas, without ever losing her good heart or her need to serve the greater good. But naturally, being Fern, she messes things up and has to salvage the collateral damage. I liked that in this story, Fern has some romance in the works too, unlike in the first novella of the series, which was equally funny, but more of a mystery than chick lit. Charming and emotionally deep, French Toasted came to a satisfying conclusion that touched my heart. Five thumbs up!Product details

French Toasted A SitcomStyle Comedy Set in Paris Broads Abroad Book 2 edition by Gwen Ellery Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
I'm loving this series. I read the first story and wanted another hit of Fern and her loopy thought processes. She and her "broads abroad" are like a combination of Bridget Jones and Absolutely Fabulous, but in their twenties. Hilarious losers who get into funny scrapes! Love it.
Completely unexpected little novella with humor and charm--you have to take a little while to read this. It's a great story and nothing like you expect it to be. Gwen has a fun way of telling stories and this is one I would definitely read again!
If you've ever known someone who's codependent or an alcoholic and wished you could give them a hug or a good shake, you'll totally get where Fern is coming from when she tries to save her cousin from herself (herself being both Fern and the cousin, LOL). I won't give away the end, but let's just say Fern gets a good look at herself in the process, and I got a ton of smiles and laughs out of her journey. I recommend this novella to anyone who needs anything more than they should, which is pretty much most people, I'd say! A humorous, uplifting read, with a dash of romance--just what the doctor ordered.
French Toasted was the first novella I've read in the series and I found it a relatively light read. One of the characters is an alcoholic which brought a darker side to the novella for me because I don't find that a topic for hilarity. I understood why the other reviewers so far found the writing amusing, but the misadventure type of humor just didn't hit home for me. I still enjoyed the story as a non-humorous look at young people living abroad and trying to find their place.
